FAQ

1. Does eye donation mean total replacement of the eyeball?
A.) No, this is a common misconception. Only the diseased black of the eye (cornea) can be replaced if the recipient is fit to accept it.

2. The cornea has totally turned white since long; can it be corrected by eye donation?
A.) If the retina and optic nerve head are healthy as per a sonography, there are good chances that it would be useful unless amblyopia has set in.

3. Can a damaged retina be corrected by eye donation? Or else this can replace any diseased part of eye?
A.) No, only corneal pathology can be corrected. Also serves as a window to treat retinal diseases if any behind.

4. I suffer from a systemic illness, can I donate my eyes? Patients with what diseases are not fit for donating.
A.) Except for HIV, slow virus diseases, storage disorders, and haematogenous cancers, every one can donate their eyes.

5. Within what interval can I get my cataract operated in the second eye?
A.) As early as a month from first eye surgery.

6. I am myopic and underwent laser surgery for retinal breaks, how safe is cataract surgery for me?
A.) There is a slight increase in risk compared to a normal eye, but still is extremely safe.

7. My child has a squint since birth but seeing well, at what age can I get it operated.
A.) Can get it done as early as 3 - 5 years, but if maintaining binocularity can delay it till 21 years.

8. My child has drooping eyelids, what should I do?
A.) This is probably congenital, should be evaluated and if not resolved with conservative management and depending upon the age can consider surgery if risk of amblyopia exists.

9. One child had retinoblastoma, what are the chances of the other sibling and next generation getting it?
A.) Risk is higher, but not necessary that it would carry on to next generation.

10. I am a patient of RP (retinitis pigmentosa) and night blindness, is there any answer thus far? Do I lose my vision further? Is my progeny also are at risk of RP?
A.) As of now it cannot be cured, but in near future retinal prosthesis could be the answer. Chances of visual loss further exist. If disease isinherited in a dominant pattern, then chances of progeny acquiring disease are high.

11. Would artificial retina/retinal prosthesis be available in near future? How effective are those?
A.) Yes, could be effective, but still in clinical trials.

12. Do all premature babies require screening by a retinal surgeon, and in full term babies do they also need to be checked up particularly if they contract some systemic disease early?
A.) Yes and it is a good practice to get diseased full term babies screened early.

13. My child eyes are too small, they do not fix on an image, eyes keep wandering, what to do? Can it happen to my next child too?
A.) Should be evaluated by eye doctor. It is not necessary that it will occur in subsequent child.

14.What if I move my eye during the laser treatment?
A.) While the treatment is performed, you will be asked to look at a light under the laser. You are required to look steadily at the light throughout the operation, since this keeps the eye centred under the laser. However, if you temporarily look away or lose the ability to look at the fixation light, do not be concerned. The laser is equipped with a special eye tracker that tracks the eye at 200 times a second throughout the proced

15.Will I be able to get rid of my glasses completely?
A.) That is our aim too. The only thing that we prepare our patients for is the event of needing a touch up or re treatment as they call it.This is sometimes because, in spite of having done our best and taken all predictable objectives, we still cannot predict wound healing. However, this is treatable and we offer to re-treat this number free of cost. Hence,it only means that in RARE cases LASIK may be in two steps. The rate of this re-treatment or fine tuning in our center is less than 1% which in most centers is above 5 %.The success rates of each center differ and that is because success depends on a combination of doctors experience, technology the doctor is using and the general practices of sterilization, disposables etc.
